Celebrating Timkat in Ethiopia

Ethiopia has very deep Christian historical roots – dating back to biblical times. Every year, Ethiopians hold a special celebration for Epiphany called Timkat. It’s a three-day festival with religious processions, parades, and dancing in this streets. After the city-wide processions on the first day of Timkat, the priests stay up all night blessing holy water in a large outdoor pool. The following morning, enthusiastic “youngsters” bathe in the water (or are sprayed by the holy hose). My friend Emma was fortunate enough to be “blessed” in the face by the holy hose.
